Solar energy is not only a reliable and long-lasting source of energy but also a cost-effective one. Thanks to this, solar panels have grown in popularity, and today they can be seen in almost every household.

If you are thinking of buying solar panels but not sure which type to choose, you’ve come to the right place.

Main Types of Solar Panels

Most of the solar panels available fall into three groups: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film.

Monocrystalline solar panels

Monocrystalline panels are some of the oldest developed technologies. The name suggests that these panels are of a single crystal structure. They consist of a silicon crystal seed, and this is why they are also known as monocrystalline silicon panels.

Monocrystalline panels occupy less space, have high power outputs, and last the longest. They also tend to be less affected by high temperatures compared to the other two types.

Polycrystalline solar panels

Polycrystalline is a relatively new technology. These panels are also created from a crystal structure. But instead of drawing the silicon seed up as with monocrystalline, the silicon is left to cool.

Previously, people considered polycrystalline panels indifferent because they were less efficient. But, because of the cost-effective method they are produced, they have now become the leading technology on the solar panels market.

Thin-film panels

When compared to monocrystalline and polycrystalline, thin-film panels are different technology. Manufacturers make them by placing films of photovoltaic material onto a substrate. These solar panels are the easiest to produce, and this is why they are the less expensive option.

The Best Type

As you are selecting the type of panel you would like for your solar systems, much of your decision depends on the specifics of your situation and property.

For people who have limited space, thin-film panels are the best option. Both monocrystalline and polycrystalline are good choices. Monocrystalline panels produce more electricity and are suitable for bigger areas, while polycrystalline are less space-efficient.
